PDO Olive Oil: meaning and features

PDO organic extra virgin olive oil

PDO is the acronym for “Protected Designation of Origin”.

It is a legal protection mark that the European Union attributes to foods whose qualitative characteristics depend essentially or exclusively on the territory in which they were produced.

This brand can only be applied to controlled production cycles which only took place in pre-established geographical areas. The environment in which the raw material is grown must possess certain requisites capable of certifying the production of a unique olive oil of its kind.

The production must necessarily follow very strict rules which aim to protect both the final consumer and the manufacturing company.

In order for a product to be recognized as D.O.P., it is necessary that the production, transformation and elaboration phases take place in a defined geographical area.

A control body guarantees that those who produce PDO products respect the stringent production rules, established in the production specification.

Another essential component for attributing the PDO mark to an olive oil consists in submitting to the control of an independent Certification Body, recognized and specifically appointed by the Ministry of Agricultural and Forestry Policies.

Once the product has obtained the PDO certification, it is in any case subject to periodic checks aimed at verifying its compliance with the production specification. The checks are used to ensure that the product maintains the characteristics that have made it a quality olive oil to the point of deserving the Protected Designation of Origin.

The PDO it’s not mandatory. We decided to create this new line to offer our customers a better guarantee on the quality of our products.
